It's National Eating Disorder Awareness Week (NEDAW) and I wanted to share with you some tips for coping while recovering from an eating disorder.

It’s National Eating Disorder Awareness Week (NEDAW) and I wanted to share with you some tips for coping while recovering from an eating disorder.

It is important in recovery to learning healthy coping skills that can replace the unhealthy ones controlled by the eating disorder. This means we must learn better and healthier ways to handle our emotions and deal with difficult feelings and situations.

In this video, I share the top five coping mechanisms that have helped me.

  1. Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT): exercises and tools to help “reason” your way to healthier activities.
  2. Creative Activities: this can be a form of artistry, music, woodwork–anything that gets the creative juices flowing!
  3. Positive Reading: reading books that inspire and lift you up whether they are related to recovery or not.
  4. Mindful Exercise: easy and short physical activities such as yoga or hitting a punching bag.
  5. Writing: journaling for yourself and/or blogging as a way to connect with others.

I also share a couple activities that weren’t helpful early in recovery but are more helpful now.

These activities are taking baths and baking. I explain in the video why they did more harm than good early on in my eating disorder recovery and why now they are some of my go-to tools for managing stress and negative emotions.
