During November and December here at Libero, our theme is “The Holidays“. The holidays can be a wonderful time of year; however, they can also be difficult. Self-care is important any time of the year, but it is particularly important during the holiday season.

We asked some of the Libero Contributors how to practice self-care during the holidays. Here’s what they had to say:

Laura MacKinnon:

“Self-care means maintaining regular practices that work for me.”

For me, self-care means maintaining regular practices that work for me. For example, meditating daily and doing food prep once per week. It also includes saying no to things that I don’t really want to do or that I know won’t work for my schedule, and having enough unstructured down time.

“I do things with my family that I enjoy and skip things that cause stress.”

I prioritize self-care during the holidays the same way I do the rest of the year. I set boundaries between my personal life and work life. I do things with my family that I enjoy and skip things that cause stress. I remember what is important this time of year and keep the focus off money and on gratitude.

Amy Carey:

“I take care of myself by maintaining as much of a normal routine as I possibly can.”

During the holidays, I take care of myself by maintaining as much of a normal routine as I possibly can. My family participates in many fun events and activities throughout the holiday season, but we don’t over-commit. I have two young boys and while the Christmas season is very exciting, we also need normalcy. I also don’t allow myself to get worked up about gifts and making everything perfect. The most important part of the holidays for me is having my family together.

Lauren Bersaglio (@laurenbsag):

“Setting aside “me time” is the most important form of self-care. “

For me, during the holidays setting aside “me time” is the most important form of self-care. The holidays are filled with events and activities that, despite being wonderful, can be draining for an introvert like me. Setting aside time alone to read a book, paint my nails, or watch my favourite shows is really important in order to avoid social burnout. Self-care this time of year takes a lot of balance: balancing time with loved ones with time with myself. I find checking in with myself (and my energy) regularly and setting boundaries is the best way to maintain this balance.
