Before you start reading... There has never been a time when our community and content was needed more. Unlike other sites, we don't publish sponsored content or share affiliate links. We also don’t run ads on our site and don’t have any paywalls in front of our content–-anyone can access all of it for free.

This means we rely on donations from our community (people like YOU!) to keep our site running. We want to be here to support you all through this pandemic and beyond, which is why we are asking you to consider donating whatever you are able.

A single (or monthly) donation of just $5 will make a HUGE difference and will help keep our nonprofit running so we can continue offering peer support for mental health through our content.

Self-harm isn’t something I’ve talked about much, but I really wanted to take this opportunity to share my story and experiences with cutting because I think there are a lot of misperceptions related to self-harm and as well as guilt and shame. I am hoping that if you have dealt with self-harm in any form, you will see from this video that you are not alone. And that you don’t need to feel guilty or ashamed. I also hope this video will encourage you to seek help if you haven’t already. Remember, YOU ARE ALIVE – even if it doesn’t feel like it.

Here’s a link to the Self-harm article I mention in this video by Gala Darling:

Remember, self-harm is a SERIOUS thing and you need to get help as soon as possible if this is something you struggle with. If you feel tempted to self-harm, get out of the house, GO SOMEWHERE PUBLIC, and call a friend or a support helpline.

  • Thanks for this Lauren. It is so great when people speak out about this subject. Unfortunately I have had problems hearing the video (which disappointed me hugely) but I appreciate the link to gala darling. That was a great article which I have shared with an online group I run for people who are trying to gain recovery from self harm. Much appreciated.

    • Thanks so much for the comment, Cate! I'm sorry you had troubles with the sound…I have tried viewing the video again both on my YouTube channel and on the embed link in the blog post and it is fine. Perhaps try using headphones? I hope you can find a way to make it work!
      Take Care,
